If you’d have asked me about two years ago where I’d place Sakamoto Days it’d be much higher, but it also had a lot less competition from other series competing for headspace. It’s still a fun story, and one I plan to collect to completion. Taro Sakamoto is a convenience store owner, a family man, and is now having to deal with the consequences of being a retired hitman.
Yuto Suzuki has a really great sense for action comic choreography and the absurd. I wouldn’t be surprised if comics such as One Punch Man and JoJo’s bizarre adventure played a large part as inspirations leading up to his work in Shonen Jump. He’s one of the few shonen battle authors who actually understands the importance of having lateral battles rather than power creep.
The characters are memorable, and there’s plenty of growth. The skill sets for each character help with the various situations they get put into. We’ve yet to see sakamoto in any real kind of bind though, but I reckon that might be coming soon.
